Chris Hyslop

Youth Worker

Chris is sort of a human border collie – intelligent, hard-working, fun-loving, and loyal, but very capable of getting up to mischief when he isn’t focused on leading others, (which delights his grandchildren, and which others can find either entertaining or irritating).

Chris did well academically, continuing on to university and seminary after high school, but hated the pressure of being a student with assignments and exams hanging over his head, so he is very sympathetic to those who struggle in school or value it primarily for the social connections there. He has also had a wide variety of work experience, (including retail, driving deliveries, working in the salmon fishery, owning his own drywall company, working in a group home for delinquent boys, and more), which has helped him to develop a strong work ethic, a desire to help others figure out how to ‘work to live’, rather than ‘live to work’, and a deep appreciation for the partnership of those who invest their hard-earned money with him in the work he does with young people.

Chris leads the Verge, a faith community made up of people who feel sent to the young people and families in the central part of Abbotsford. He builds redemptive relationships with young people in wood and metal shop and over ping-pong at lunch in one school, playing ball hockey at another school, at a Friday night drop-in centre, and wherever else in that neighborhood he is able to find and connect with youth.

What if, having discovered the Good News about who Jesus is and what He’s done for us, we actually spent the rest of our lives following His instructions to share that Good News with others who don’t know it yet?
